calavera is the spanish word for skull. the word can also refer to any artistic representation of skulls. the artist on this project, paul mungar, described on facebook, “the skull is basically representative of paying homage to those who came before you. it’s not a symbol of death, rather a celebration of the life that precedes it as a reminder of those p-ssed. tap identifies closely with the calavera and other traditions -ssociated with dia de los muertos because of neighbors’ -ssociations/membership in various latin american cultures and because the themes around the holiday provide clear parallels to tap values…. namely respect for elders, mentoring, and remembrance/homage.”

the alley project (tap) is a public art initiative in detroit, michigan -ssociated with young nation. it was started by erik howard as an effort to facilitate and support the themes of creative expression, positive youth-adult partnerships, structure, community responsibility, and partic-p-tory processes. the project has been met with much praise. most projects are spray paint art, or graffiti. tap works in neighborhoods where homeowners allow the artists to use their interior alleys, garages, walls, and doors as canvas for the murals. the murals enrich the aesthetics of the community, provide a creative outlet for the artists, and have earned the respect of local gangs who largely steer clear of the installations

the calavera is a recurring symbol in work -ssociated with the group. the latest work from the project can be found on twitter, vine, and instagram under the hashtag #thealleyproject.

the project includes education for its artists on a wide range of topics spanning the history of the street art form, respectfully entering communities, co-occuring movements, and practical tips on the craft. a major goal of this education is to bring together youth and elders. that particular aspect is modeled after a similar successful program in germany.

an open studio is hosted every friday from 5-7pm

tap’s studio luevanos also partners with organizations like inside southwest to offer a media workshop series aimed at younger people (under 30) in the detroit area who are interested in producing media to shape their own narrative about their communities

one way the tap project raises funds for programming is by selling mini can wall kits, which helps more people get involved in the process of public art
