tabula rasa _ a latin phrase which translates to ‘scr_ped tablet’ or ‘blank slate’. it originates from when the romans used wax tablets to take notes, and they blanked these tablets by heating and smoothening the wax to write on it again

a lot of philosophers used tabula rasa as a concept to grapple with the question of knowledge _ is it nature or nurture? some argue that the mind is born without built_in information and all knowledge comes from experience or perception

i believe ‘tabula rasa’ is most useful when thinking about the city. who has the power to write, erase, and re_write? which cultural histories, traditions, hegemonies get imprinted onto our tabulas? which narratives get seen? which of those are never written? is there sp_ce for all of our stories in this palimpsest of who we are? or are we forever going to have to be scr_ped away, to make sp_ce for more palatable tales? what parts of who we are are we left tak boleh to rasa? what must we numb and anesthetize just to move forward?

i believe there is beauty, power, trauma, and sacred information within each of our dnas that guide us. embedded, dormant, always there. no matter how much is erased, the tablet remembers. we must tap into this knowledge at the roots of who we are and reclaiming our right to ourselves, our dialects, our ancestry, our futures. we are all connected by this utmost task, and there is great power in lending penmanship towards the destinies of each other in the process. we are always writing together. everybody has something to offer

we must all write towards liberation, towards justice, towards accountability, towards freedom, and towards re_writing our தலைஎழுத்து on our own terms
