in a land filled with a lot of fauna
a lot of flora
a lot of language
a lot of food
& a lot of prayer
& one day joni & i were sitting opposite each other
trying to watch indonesian news
joni asks me
‘smai
do you know why people pray?’
i thought about it
i some kind of very western scientific answer
so joni tells me about the people that are starving
the people that are struck by tropical disease
the people that encounter the language of loss
which is all of us
there was a man in the village
who wore a fruit basket on his head
& one day he run into me
& he was speaking frantically
i thought he was speaking the local bahasa
a language i didn’t understand
it turns out the man has lost his only son
& it wasn’t a language that was written down
it wasn’t an official language
they were ramblings
yet
this language of loss
is one that we all understand
& though you might be depressed
& things might be difficult
it’s always worth being grateful
& doing the best for others
to ease that language of loss
as best we can
