and, i mean, the question that spring to mind is, when you were going through this process–because it’s not something that happened instantly–were you in a position where you felt at some point that there were questions you needed to ask that you might not necessarily get the answer to in church? did you go through a period like that?

absolutely, and i have a very clear example, which was when i went to university, i was studying the history of colonialism and when christopher columbus went over to the americas and planted a flag and claimed all the land that they found. and part of what absolutely shocked me and actually disgusted me was finding out that along with that–this often doesn’t get mentioned. but along with that they would read a doc-ment to the people that they would encounter. and the doc-ment basically said, “we have the rightful ownership of this land because we are part of the catholic church and god has given the authority to the pope. now join our faith and submit to us and there will be peace. don’t submit to us and we’ll make war with you and enslave you.” i really felt challenged. is this the faith that i want to be a part of? and this is what christians have done in the name of god?

i feel like i went through a period of crisis in my faith and it really threw me. and i really had to really wrestle with that question. i realised that this is part of my history if i’m going to call myself a christian
