this one begins with a confession and we’re left to wonder how much of it (if any) is literal rather than metaphorical. i guess, like a lot of slime choir’s lyrics, it’s ultimately for the listener to decide what it means. however, knowing that slime struggles with anxiety about his health and heart condition makes me suspect that maybe “it’s safe to say my heart is paying for all of it” refers to something more literal than metaphorical; perhaps a quickened rеsting heart rate that slime didn’t undеrstand in the heat of the moment, and therefore was very anxious about? keeping in mind where the song goes from here lyrically, this seems likely as at least the origin and inspiration for those lyrics. but who can know it for sure?

considering how much slime admires the work of the comedian, bo burnham, i can’t help but wonder if “only where everybody knows” is a reference to a line in one of burnham’s songs called “all eyes on me” from his inside film, where he sings “we’re going to go where everybody knows everybody” in reference to the internet. if this is indeed a reference to that line, then it makes all the more sense that slime is probably writing these lyrics while in the midst of a sort of anxiety attack or at least a very anxious episode. he goes on from here to imply that maybe medication is the only way he can let go of his anxiety nowadays, so it makes sense that he was probably referring to actual doctors when he sings “there’s no doctor around here”
