and this is his story

high school student
back in san diego
he learned about rockefeller
about to be fuego

then he was like

from that moment on

he attended brown
and was taking a course
“social entrepreneurship”
and he became a force

he started thinking about
his own experience
engaging students
through their own interests

empowered by his mentors
to chase his dream
creating something
that the world’s never seen

rhymes with reason
was his idea, yo
it teaches vocab in a way
that the kids know

i was surprised to learn
that it supplements the c
also teachers pay for it
i thought it was free

i was so inspired
by his hip-hop g*nius
i asked him why he does it
he said the kids need this

a lightbulb moment
for me was this
when he brought up freire
and talking about the kids

having their buckets filled only
by their teachers
when it should be mutual…
bleachers

i’m gonna sample his work
by incorporating cyphers
using the vocab
compet-tion…hyper

give them opportunities
to become creators
of their own vocab
to diss all the haters

what i learned about
hip-hop education
was that this was practical
it was a real application

i also learned g*nius
comes in different forms
young, old, white, black
hip-hop is the norm

comfortable with myself
and how i play a role
authenticity is key
it’s deep up in the soul

when it comes to teaching hip-hop
i gotta be real
with myself and with my kids
