the boy puts his hands over his face…not knowing if this is the last thing he will experience before it is all over…until his ashes are given to someone

i heard the shots as i was driving up the mountain! everyone is down outside dude! everyone! we have to go…out the back!
the boy

he’s too numb at this point to warn fam of the dude standing guard in the back
fam grabs the blood covered dude 2’s .45 and starts toward the back of the pacific palisades los angeles home
he leaps over the shattered buddha statue on the floor and waves the boy on, as if to tell him to jump over the broken statue as well

fam turns the corner of the final hallway leading to the back exit
two gunshots
fam falls backward, his last sight being the boy running for the gl-ss wall that lines the living room
gl-ss is once again shattered…the boy finds himself running, closing up to the infinity pool. there’s no destination in mind, no purpose, no reasoning…he’s just running

son of a!
the boy hears no sound. he reaches the edge of the pool, the edge of the mountain…
with no hesitation…he continues to run
for the first time, ever since he stepped off of that summer bus…so long ago…he doesn’t feel alone
