[sam shamoun]
now, read with me, genesis 22:2. “take your son, your only son, whom you love.” isaac is the “only son,” the beloved of his father. “only” son is “yachid” [in hebrew] — which, in greek, can be translated either as “monogenés” or “agapétos.” “monogenés” means “one and only,” “unique.” “agapétos” means “beloved.”

in hebrews 11:17, it actually uses the word “monogenés” for isaac. jesus is called “monogenés” several times. he’s also “agapétos,” the “beloved with whom i am well pleased.”

“so abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and his son isaac, cut the wood for the burnt offering, and arose, and went to the place of which god had told him.”

“-on the third day- — the third day — then abraham said to his young men, ‘stay here with the donkey and i and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.'” if you read the hebrew, abraham literally is saying, “the boy and i will worship, and -we- will come again.”

let’s see what hebrews 11:17-19 says about abraham’s reasoning. “abraham reasoned that god would be able to raise isaac back from the dead” — from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back. so in that figurative sense, when did abraham receive his son back from the dead? genesis 22:4 says, “on the third day.”

when did god receive his beloved son back from the dead? third day!

“and abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on isaac, his son.” did you catch that? who was carrying the wood which would be the instrument of his death? both of them bore their instrument of execution

abraham said, “god will provide for himself the lamb.” but then we have a problem, folks. verse 13 shows us it wasn’t a lamb that god provided but a ram. the ram was sacrificed in the place of isaac to save isaac. the ram was caught in a thicket. you know what a thicket is? a th-rn bush. what did they place on jesus’s head? you get it

so where is the lamb? “behold the lamb of god, who takes away the sin of the world.” here is god’s lamb, god’s lamb who is god’s son. unlike abraham, the father went through with the sacrifice and offered his son

“i have seen and bore witness that this is the son of god.”
