as a doctoral student, dr. dia designed the curriculum healing young people thru empowerment (h.y.p.e.): a hip hop therapy program for black teenage boys, to help young men at the highest risk of incarceration by integrating hip hop culture and psychological theories. during h.y.p.e. workgroups, rap songs, printed lyrics, and activities are used to facilitate dialogue and self-exploration
the goals of h.y.p.e. are:
• educate partic-p-nts about their problematic behaviors
• help them constructively handle “strong emotions”
• improve racial ident-ty development
• encourage accountability
• enhance personal growth
• increase appropriate behavior
in 2008, dr. dia piloted h.y.p.e. at a wisconsin department of juvenile corrections facility, with 17 youth ages 14-22. the response to h.y.p.e. from youth and staff was overwhelmingly positive. since 2009 youth involved in the department of juvenile justice throughout the states of georgia and mississippi, as well as in louisville, kentucky; brooklyn, new york; minneapolis, minnesota; and pensacola, florida have completed h.y.p.e. workgroups. h.y.p.e. is also being implemented with youth involved in and transitioning out of foster care
