i shut my eyes tight and crawl slowly through the mire and bled to reach something safe. if i refuse to open my eyes, the bullets whispering loud lies will miss the mark. as i continue my trudge, i grow convinced that the final trench is behind me. i lay my head down paying the surrounding viscera no mind. my eyes are thrust open, a silent bullet lodges in my back and begins singing. i slide back into the trench. in my chest a chorus of shrapnel crescеndos and i join in. i scream. i forget the world bеyond the trench for a time lost in the music of bullets, and bombs, and blood. i scream. eventually the orchestra fades into the familiar restless whispers, i hide from in well known futility. i begin my ascend once more
