[verse 1]
real talk i had to research my history
cos what they taught at school was total f-cking mystery
my whole perception and ideas of what it means to be a black man was limited, offensive and demean to me
savagery and slavery
that sh-t ain’t make believe but it’s a lie to say that that’s all africans of old achieved
nah, that’s not okay with me
i think it’s plain to see, they fed us lies to justify a racist ideology
f-ck your anthropology
the world’s first civilisations were african with skin that was mahogany
definitely not probably
even the early european travellers confirmed their african ethnology

[bridge]
so now i’m standing in my truth
proud to say i’m black
i’ll shout it from the roof
and i’m channeling the ancestors, i’m living proof
that it pays to learn your history

[chorus]
cos we’re only as deep as our roots
i try and stay grounded
gotta keep honouring the ancestors
cos we’re only as deep as our roots
our roots

[verse 2]
i grew up mainly around white people
and yes i like ’em cos i like people
but i admit that it was difficult at times when you
feel alienated cos you’re different and it grinds on you
see it was in my first year of college things reversed
everyone was black and it was time for me to be immersed
but this was even worse
i felt like an alien to my own people cos the culture was unknown it hurt
this led me to search
for sense of identify that satisfied my questions, i had to learn
in fact it turned
into spiritual awakening that helped me truly understand my life on earth

[bridge]
so now i’m standing in my truth
proud to say i’m black
i’ll shout it from the roof
and i’m channeling the ancestors, i’m living proof
that it pays to learn your history

[chorus]
cos we’re only as deep as our roots
i try and stay grounded
gotta keep honouring the ancestors
cos we’re only as deep as our roots
our roots
