in a twenty fifteen nissan toward jersey city
to attend a new club that had opened a few months earlier
it was raining, they were speeding, the car skidded and hit the median
spun and then struck a retaining wall
three seriously injured, and two dead at the scene
and one of the dead was my best friend brit

she spent half hеr life being passed back and forth
bеtween a mentally unstable mother and an alcoholic father
which is bad enough, and worse when they’re 800 miles apart
and yeah, she hurt a lot of people, she broke a lot of stuff
her heart made up for all of it

she was in rehab twice and generally wasn’t anyone’s idea of an angel
she had finally started taking the steps to get her life in order
she was enrolled in school again was ready to start the new semster
and a wet patch of asphalt took her
wasn’t even anyone’s fault

just dumb f_cking luck

i remember her sitting with me in the diner
telling me how well things were going and then stealing my wallet
i remember her flinging paint against her bedroom wall like a
half_assed jackson pollock, just to do it
i remember her sharp tongue, just like her mom’s
only brit used it to be funny and mean, not mean and mean
i remember her horrible dye jobs, and telling her that they
weren’t that bad

i wish i believed in heaven, because i would like to see her again
i was never ready to say goodbye in the first place
