rolf harris - northern territorian كلمات أغنية

i’m a northern territorian
i’m a refugee from tracy
and i can’t wait to get back home
i belong in the town i know
can’t wait to get back home to darwin

stood in line in the searing heat
kids all cl_stered round your feet
precious little left to eat
waiting for a plane

men all felt they had to stay
working 18 hours a day
only barely time to say goodbye
goodbye love. look after the kids, love
i’ll see you again

and a man is not supposed to cry
but when he tried to say goodbye
thought that i was going to die
leaving him behind

looked across the plane to pete
strapped securely in his seat
i had to strain to hear him speak
“goodbye, son. look after your mum, son. you’re a man now. you’re the man now, son. see you soon.”
i’m a northern territorian
and you really made me welcome
and i don’t want to hurt you folks
but i pine for the town i know
i can’t wait to get back home to darwin

but there’s a fear in my bones when i think of going back
and the self_same cold, clutching fear when i think of staying
life here is one useless round of creating jobs to do to stop you thinking
trying to keep your heart from sinking sitting in the dark when the kids are sleeping, thinking of my man

thinking of my man and quietly praying

i’m a northern territorian
i just can’t take this climate
be so glad to get back home to the heat of the town i know
so glad to get back home to darwin

darwin. will it ever be the same again?

(spoken)

no matter what you do, your thoughts just keep dragging back to that christmas. frightening. the only thing that held us together was that tiny little transistor radio. it was like a lifeline

he said “stick with me. i’ve got a plan.”
those were his exact words
“stick with me. if you stick with me and it works, i’ll get double the numbers out tomorrow. and if that works i’ll get triple out the next day. stick with me.”
he broadcast to us on the hour, every hour. kept us in touch with what was happening all over darwin. must have been 40,000 people. and how he took the strain of the knowledge that all those people depended on him, i’ll never know. he took that strain _ he held us up _ his personality held us together, and the important thing is he got us out. he broke 79 rules to do it, but he got us out

major general allen stretton
none of us will ever forget that name

i’m a northern territorian and i’m coming home to darwin

i can’t wait to get back home to darwin
