i mentioned earlier that the first broadway show i ever saw was company
actually, my parents saw it first and they loved it
so naturally, they would love the next sondheim show they saw
which was follies
and they walked out
i should tell you that a few years later, when i was in high school
they got divorced
and it wasn’t until i saw follies myself
and i discovered what it was about
that i went, “ah, that’s why they left”
perhaps it hit a little too close to home for them

that makes me think of my dad
and i’ve often wondered what he was thinking when he heard this
