“i want this program to be fair and properly balanced, so i should point out that there were a number of anti_roosevelt songs, some from the right and some from the left. first lady eleanor roosevelt was very active working against racial discrimination, and she became as much a target as fdr was himself. this ditty reflects the prejudices of those days: ‘you kiss the negroes and i’ll kiss the jews—and we’ll stay in the white house as long as we choose.'” (audience murmurs)

“ooh, you can boo if you want to.” (audience chuckles)

“now, on the other side, communists and people sympathetic to the communists attacked roosevelt during the period of the stalin_hitler pact, which was signed in august of 1939, and which ended on june 21st, 1941, when hitler attacked the soviet union. during this two_year period, the communists said, ‘no interference in europe!’ they had a slogan: ‘yanks are not comin’!’ and they sang this song.”
