man. con_cupiscence. it’s not copalescence, it’s not coincidence, like other people been saying. concupiscence, um, i know i said son of manoah is my favorite song on this album, but concupiscence is a close second! um, if you’ve been following the journey of this album, you’ll remember that in the first track, sam’s repentance, there’s a line that i say from the point of view of the holy spirit, that says “manoah’s son, who took a jawbone and slayed a thousand ones, but your pride turned into concupiscence.” and so coming off the previous track of this album, which is jawbone, now we’re at track 4, which is concupiscence

and it’s at this midpoint of the album, that things begin to take a wild turn for the worse. um, just as samson took pride in himself and foolishly thought that his strength was his own, so do i begin to take the credit for my gifts and abilities as a christian rapper, and my pridefulness leads me to concupiscence, which means strong desire, especially s_xual desire

and so this song is split into 3 verses, and beginning with verse 1, it’s a juxtaposition between samson’s struggles with pride and l_st and my personal struggles with pride and l_st, for the purpose of modernizing samson’s story in a way that we can relate to it today

and so in the following verse, i get into a whisper_quiet register as i recount the story of a successful christian rapper whose pride and l_st lure him into a one_night stand with a groupie he meets on tour. crazy. um, and so interestingly enough, i actually wrote this verse to my future self, um, as a lesson on what not to do if the lord chooses to expand my ministry and broaden my reach

and so uh, we get to the final verse, which i would say is the darkest on the album, uh, with me fully embracing my l_stful passions and desires and choosing to reject god in exchange for momentary pleasure. uh, which leads me to say things like “and i implored/and i implored/not to the lord/i’ll hit ‘em up in the morning/but for right now, i’m ‘bout to have me some fun/i’m bout to get what i want.” and so it’s sad, it’s awful, but how often do we say and think this in moments in our life when we feel overwhelmed with temptation, and we allow the pleasures of this world to convince us that they are somehow worthy to be compared to the riches and fullness of god’s glory that he has prepared for us?

and so it is my prayer that as you listen to this song, and you enjoy the catchiness of this hook, uh, that you will really listen to the lyrics of each verse, and that it will remind you that although sin is tempting, it’s only end result is to destroy you. and so may you choose jesus in the midst of your temptation, and like proverbs 18:10 says, may you run to him and find refuge, because even his name alone is a strong tower, and is more than able to keep you safe
