[intro]
“we brought you in from the street, and the world outside these walls, by the virtue of the gathering song. it brings us to one. the sign of the cross anchors us. the greeting helps us to become the people that god wants us to be. so, in the introductory rights of the mass, the next thing that we do is we acknowledge that we are sinners. and we do this in a very public way, to confess our communion with one another in our weaknesses, and in our strengths. the pеnitential right serves as a way for us to call to mind who wе are before god; and calling to mind who we are before god, we come face_to_face with our weaknesses, and with our failings. the primary way that we do this in the mass, as it’s structured today, is through the confiteor. the confiteor simply means, ‘i confess.’ and we confess to one another, so we’re acknowledging to each other that, ‘i need your prayer, brother. i need your prayer, sister, because i don’t always live as god asks me to live.’ and so, recognizing that right at the very beginning, we call upon god to mercifully forgive us, and strengthen us, and love us again, even though we are weak and fail. the confiteor ends with what looks like an absolution: ‘may almighty god have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.’ but it’s not a strict absolution like we do in confession, so there’s no need for the sign of the cross. a lot of people make the sign of the cross when i give that little blessing there, but it’s not needed. um, we’re recognizing that god is the source of our mercy, and god is the source of our strength; and he heals us, every day, all the time. that is concluded with a little litany called the ‘kyrie, eleison.’ ‘kyrie, eleison’ is actually greek. it’s a remnant of a time when greek was the language of the la _ of the mass. after greek, it became latin, and after latin, translated to the vernacular, or the local languages of the people. but we retain the ‘kyrie,’ an ancient testimony to our praise of god’s mercy. so it’s not so much, ‘oh my god, i’m so bad, i’m such a sinner, i’m such a sinner.’ but when we say, ‘lord have mercy, christ have mercy, lord have mercy,’ we’re making an acclimation about god’s affection, and god’s continuing forgiveness of us and our guilt. so let’s try this as we gather together this morning; ‘i confess to almighty god, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what i have done, and in what i have failed to do; through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore i ask blessed mary, ever_virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the lord our god.’ may almighty god have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. amen. lord have mercy…”

[verse]
may the daughter’s blood rush from her veins to her fingertips
and soak her skin in its blessed red kiss
may the father’s words be a painful remnant of his wicked sins
and may he bathe in the eternal fire of h_ll
may the mother’s pain heal itself through years to come
and may she find another man to love
may the brother’s tears wash away in the river of peace
and may he come to find the man he’s meant to be

[chorus]
and may god almighty set his wrath upon
my frail, weak body for all i’ve done
may he show me a glimpse of h_ll through his own eyes
and may the lord have mercy for my cursed sins
may he never forgive me or love me again
may he force me to regret all of my life
oh, may god almighty set his wrath upon
my frail, weak body for all i’ve done
may he show me a glimpse of h_ll through his own eyes
and may the lord have mercy for my cursed sins
may he never forgive me or love me again
may he force me to regret all of my life
[outro]
“…in what i have done, and in what i have failed to do; through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore i ask blessed mary, ever_virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the lord our god.’ may almighty god have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. amen. lord have mercy. lord have mercy. christ have mercy. christ have mercy. lord have mercy…”
