too keen to miss the locals

the furnaceman descended
the next day early on
only felt the body
when his shovel hit the bone
and up went davy’s body
some sympathy was shown
but the furnaceman, he only said
“at least he weren’t our own
it was only that blind davy
he’s well out of the way”
but i can’t shed the awful shame
i’ve felt ever since that day
