“…which we’ll talk about in a minute. but this topic is also difficult for reasons that do not come into main view too much these days, which is that there’s been a pretty explicit ideological war over the past 40 years __ between the story of structural racism and the emergent and now dominant story of color_blindness. and the war between these two stories is at the heart of the project that i want us to, um, to talk about tonight, but also the project i’m hoping to work on. so it fundamentally relies on the idea that race is not operating now, and that we must keep it that way by being color_blind.”
[verse 1: curt kennedy]
i feel molested, unprotected
fed a lot of bull and then told to digest it
there’s only one rule, that there’s no rules, accept it
they wore gold but a rope was our necklace
birth of a nation, christian or kemetic
the anger of a nation raped, yeah i get it
the anger of a nation raped, yeah i said it
the consequences of that rape, they forget it
house n_ggas and field n_ggas, it gets hectic
the church in between the lord and he_re_tics
if church don’t apply the church derelicted
the bride and the harlot best friends, her dress gets
dipped in the blood of slaves, my ancestors
invited to the wedding in chains by molesters
time flies by and the pain it still festers
protected by vipers, government, private sector
oh father god, been praying, don’t forget us
house n_ggas and field n_ggas, it’s just reckless
we shall overcome, we came to make breakfast
and sang as we hung from trees until breathless

“so black people have been trained __ surprise, surprise __ people in ferguson believe that the racist justice system is oppressing them because obama and eric holder have said statements that give them that impression.”
(crosstalk) “are you saying that racism is not a major problem in this country. are you saying that__”
“no, it is not a major problem in this country. no, it is not.”
[verse 2: curt kennedy]
you feel molested, unprotected
fed a lot of bull and then told to digest it?
yes, it was bad they hurt your ancestors
but that was the way they heard the gospel message
so while that was bad, the outcome precious
’cause suffering’s the way god spreads the gospel bestest
said it’s been hectic, yeah, i get it
but a lot of that’s over and christ deserves credit
the church messed up back then but don’t fret it
’cause slavery is biblical, even god said it
leviticus 25:44 connects it
you can buy male and female slaves as directed
and also in the new testament where paul said it
ephesians 6:5 through 11 shows god let it
it’s sad you feel molested, your anger is congested
but racism’s not the biggest problem, crime’s epic
abortion, it seems y’all hardly do prevent it
and many black churches’ doctrines are pathetic
i know i can’t relate to how you feel messed with
but let’s preach christ and the grace we’ve been blessed with

“…so what happens with color_blind ideology is that phrases like ‘affirmative action’ __ instead of them being as president johnson intended, this is idea of sort of acting affirmatively in the spirit of an equal creation, creation of an equal society __ instead they’ve become special privileges, and the whole language shifts entirely. and there’s privileges that advantage black and brown people, not an effort to level the playing field. so i put it in this way, and this is how sort of everyday people can back themselves into the logic of colorblindness. and i just want to really note, then, before i read this and talk about it, that of course there are vicious ideologues who we could say are sort of hatred_filled, trying to destroy society, making sure that people of color are pressed down and never make it. you know, okay, they exist, unfortunately, and there are more than i’d like. but the vast majority of people who subscribe to color_blindness are not those people. it’s a combination of a set of moves that produce an easy association. so, this is sort of how i see it working out for the most part: people would say to themselves, ‘well, since most people believe in racial equality (which includes myself), and since the laws have been changed to outlaw discrimination, and since i don’t see color [well, we’ll give you that one], so i can’t be a racist, and since no special benefits are accrued to me on whiteness [question mark], racism isn’t causing these inequalities!’ so you end up with a kind of if_then, if_then __ ‘if all these things are true, then i don’t know what y’all problems are about!’ right? because, this, i passed my own litmus test. so what remains left here at the end of this kind of self check? what remains left is, actually, the heart of color_blind ideology and the way it gets deployed, and that’s the behavior. because color_blind ideology imagines that there are no structures impeding us, so we have a kind of individual capacity, and this must be about the behavior of those who are being discriminated against. they must either bring it upon themselves or be uninterested, and they have imputed cultural limitations that get understood as motivating their experiences with structural racism.”
[outro: curt kennedy]
“how did we get here? what’s the secret?”
