when we’re really looking at sawiskera
the one who disrupts everything and such
he brings the winter
everything turns to ice
and the animals hide in caves
this is sawiskera’s power
because he is a disruptor
he can also disrupt our minds
he can also disrupt our intentions
and so that’s that power that sawiskera has
teharonhiawako and sawiskera
come to basically be at odds with one another
he creates the situation
so that sawiskera does not have ultimate power
ovеr the earth any longer
but hе’s compassionate
sawiskera holds the night, in a sense
and teharonhiawako holds the day
and so there’s always that division
that duality, between sawiskera and teharonhiawako
not only night and day
but the purpose of each thing in the world is controlled
but we need to have both
we are made up of both in some ways
in terms of how we look at our world
to have it in balance
i think we’ve made him more of a villain
as time has gone on
but at that time
the primary villainous thing for us
was not being able to go out
hunt, trap, and do all those things
because of those winter storms
that would come through
you see, our ancestors woke up
with a world that was alive, completely alive
and we have been taught to think of the world
as being in a dead place
in a sense, with some life
but one certainty is when we don’t do these things
like practice our ceremonies, cultures, and thanks
our world as haudenosaunee
or indigenous will come to an end
and i always say this
but the one thing we rarely do
and it’s very important, is we don’t wait for the sun to come up
we don’t watch the sun come up
just sit there and watch
i’ve been to a lot of sunrise ceremonies
we burn tobacco, and we give thanks
and everything else
because when you sit there
and you watch the sun come up
elder brother, the sun come up in the morning
you see that transition
that beautiful transition
from that darkness to life
and you start hearing the birds
and everything else
so i always try and tell people
if you really want to get that understanding
of what our world is about
go out into your backyard
about 5 in the morning
and just watch how the world changes
