on a dirty and noisy old freight

when somebody put on the brake

i found a young hobo laid out on his back

as i knelt by his side, he opened his eyes
and bravely he smiled at me

he removed thеn, with pain, a little locket and chain
said, “mother will know it’s from mе
“i was on my way home to settle right down
“but i guess that is never to be”

i saw a big engineer brush away a stray tear
as he raised the young traveler’s poor head
then he took off his cap, and he slowly stepped back
and we all knew the hobo was dead

by a strange trick of fate, i found her too late
for the white_haired old lady was gone
“but it’s better, i know, to have saved her that blow”
i thought, as i stood there alone
so i dropped in the grave the little locket he gave
to me, for the mother he loved
though they’re buried apart, i know in my heart
they’re together in heaven above
