this is the speech im giving in speech and debate
rap is a complexity
rap is the best thing in the world it is interesting intriguing and very p-ssionate today i want to show you all about rap from inside and out to get a perspective on how it is more than just ignorant belligerent people trying to be famous. rap is an art that has to be mastered….. it’s not just a profession it’s a life style you have to create an image, in other genres you show up to the studio for a couple hours get the music you need then practice it and go home or go on tour. a lot of country singers take a year off hear and only go on tour for like 30 shows. tech n9ne did 70 shows in his independent grid tour; each show takes about four hours plus autograph signing which takes 3-4 hours the tour started april 9th and ended june 20th so that’s 70 shows in 80 days taking at least 490 hours’ worth of work in those days that’s almost 43 hours a week which is more time than most people work. it is literally a full time commitment
there are a lot of want to be rappers that will just never make it, there is a forum called rap g*nius that breaks down text and on one of their segments says why most rappers won’t make it famous is because “they have no gimmick and no comp-ssion. you have to go all or nothing in the rap game” there is no imbetweeners.” “they are simple rappers with simple meanings and simple rap style. rap is made to be more complex than anything else”
why rap is more complex than any other genre of music; a lot of people think it’s just illiterate people talking fast to a beat. when it is really not it one of the most complex and detailed works of art. they use many instances of puns, -ssonance, and alliteration. for example one of the best rappers in using puns is donald glover aka childish gambino, in one of his songs bonfire he says “its childish gambino home girl drop it like the nasdaq.” as most of you know nasdaq is a stock trade, so he is implying that the girls drop it like the stock market. pun!!!! my all-time favorite rapper is tech n9ne and he has one of the best examples of alliteration in the world he does a whole verse in a song called b-boy, and the final wordplay i would be talking about is -ssonance. which is the repet-tive sound at the end of a word which is one of the hardest sk!lls to master, my favorite verse using -ssonance is “till i collapse. by eminem” my thoughts are sporadic; i act like i’m an addict, i rap like i’m addicted to smack like i’m kim mather’s. but i don’t want to go forth and back in constant battles, the fact is i would rather sit back and bomb some rappers. so this is like a full blown attack i’m launching at them, the track is on some battling raps who want some static, ‘cause i don’t really think that the fact that i’m slim matters, a plaque of platinum status is whack if i’m not the baddest
a lot of people also think that a rapper is just a rapper nothing more, there are so many different types of rappers for example: there are fast rappers, slow rappers, dis rappers, hype rappers, religious rappers, and smart rappers. i’m going to break them down to where you understand each one of those; fast rappers, include eminem, tech n9ne, twista and their main goal is to get the most word play in a really superfast way, when you listen to it a lot of people can’t understand it because they go so fast but it’s really a sk!ll that you have to master in understanding what their saying. slow rappers are not really slow a lot of them can rap fast but just choose to rap slow so the get more p-ssion in their work, like murs and mostly all old school rappers like biggie, 2pac, n.w.a. and the gheto boys
one of the newest rap styles that were resurrected from the past is the dis rapper. a diss rappers main goal is to make everyone upset, they insult other rappers, public figures and basically anybody famous. some of the all-time best diss rappers are tyler, the creator, hopsin, the joker, and king gordy. and there are many more rap genres but the last one i will be talking about is religious rappers, and i’m not talking about christian rappers. a religious rapper just tries to convince you of their beliefs usually involving god in some way, 2pac shakur was probably one of the most religious rappers, all of his songs were about what he believed in and his life style coming up. he is definitely one of the greatest rappers of all time
rap is way more complex and harder to understand than almost any other music, all other music you can understand and usually get the meaning of the song from the t-tle. rap is different you have to break down the text using context clues and -ssumptions because one song can mean something to somebody but have a totally different meaning to somebody else. there are a lot of mainstream rappers that don’t make any sense at all and don’t use any wordplay like lil wayne, two chains, souja boy, and so on, but there are a lot of rappers that still do so don’t always judge a book by its cover. the all time hardest thing to do in life is to be an underground rapper and transition to a mainstream rapper; some rappers just stop producing good music once it goes mainstream. it turns into a quality over quant-ty match up. not one person can drop 3 albums in 1 year and them be good quality music. like lil wayne for instance. he had his underground albums which where good and put him on the top like “500 degreez” “the block is hot” and “lights out”. then he made it mainstream and got “the carter” “the carter 2” and “the carter 3” which where probably some of the best albums ever and then he started coming out with cr-ppy mixtape after horrible album after terrible concert and now he is definitely the worst rapper ever. so even though some rappers are famous doesn’t mean they’re still on top. like i said before tech n9ne was always underground but just about 2 years ago he started to be a main steam artist he topped on the billboards of rap at number four with his album “something else”. that is a good example of changing from a underground rapper and still making good music. so during this time today i hope i gave you a little insight on how rap music is more than what it seems thank you
