the black arts repertory school was started by a man by the name of amari baraka, a former howard university pre-med student who was expelled from college for protesting civil rights and being a communist. amari nudist theory was thought to be communist but amari baraka was really visionary
when he moved to ny’s lower east side he had breakthrough in poetry and drama, books published plays done. the avant garde success story. the next month, after malcolm x had died, barak moved to harlem to set up the black arts repertory theater, on wl30th st and lenox. where we began to go out into the streets of harlem seven days a week with four trucks one with music, another with paintings, the other two with drama and poetry, this went on the entire year of 1965. but this was just a preface to the founding of spirit house
in 1967, malcolm x and martin luther king, civil rights leaders were stained to rest the black arts repertory theatre/school of the arts was opened to african american students who wanted to study music, dance, theater and writing. the black arts repertory school was created to offer courses that would promote cultural values of the civil rights struggle
the civil rights era was time of unrest, protest and riots when blacks fought for equality. amiri baraka’s involvement in the civil rights era was to become the response through the arts to protest for racial equality, economic succession, voting rights, segregated housing, education diversity and nationalism. in newark, new jersey there was a rebellious riot where black people were accosted by the police in shootings and public unrest. public scrutiny left many black people victims of unified political opposition
the black power movement was rooted the same as the urban landscape of the harlem renaissance of the 1920’s. although the black power movement operated for less than a year, it attracted artist of the talent of sun ra, albert aylmer and sonia sanchez, langston hughes and nikki giovanni and inspired dozens of similar black arts incubators across the u.s., propagating the black arts movement into the 1970s
amiri barak harlem activism led to the black liberation movement. the black arts theater, also known as the spirit house, is where neighborhood children gathered as students to study the arts. the school would also expand in the next expansion of the spirit house itself
