the waitress changed the dial
and the scowl on her face made me smile

a little snow was falling as i walked back to the car
and i started her up thinking that i shouldn’t drive too far

we robbed that bank in cisco on christmas eve
both of us dressed like santa claus
and the teenaged teller’s hands were trembling
as he placed the bills into our two duffel bags
we drove through the night to wichita falls
where i left you at your mama’s house
and as you pulled your bag out the back of the buick
you said to me “merry christmas, bud!”

once the door was bolted
i opened up my half
and when i saw the burst of blue inside
i couldn’t help but laugh

the teller must have thrown a dye pack
in with all the cash
and my take had been stolen
in a flash

what does it prove?
i guess what elvis said was true
i’m having a blue christmas without you
